TREATMENT FOR SCORPIONS

Although the rural desert is the scorpion's natural habitat, they do not stay contained to the desert. Scorpions tend to find their way into residential areas all throughout southern Nevada, with the Las Vegas being the hot zone, making scorpions one of the most common pests in the valley. Hence, why Allied specializes in scorpion extermination.

What do scorpions look like?

Most people identify scorpions by their tail that curves up over their back with a stinger at the end used for paralyzing pray, with large front claws used to capture pray. Scorpions are predators and a type of arachnid, which means they are related to spiders, mites, and ticks. Scorpions are known for having poor vision but are exceptional hunters. When hunting, they rely on touch and vibrations to locate prey. They come in a wide range of colors, including yellow, brown, reddish-brown, and black.

  • Distinguishing feature: dark stripes along body & tail

Behavior:

  • Feeds on small invertebrates, including other scorpions, crickets, mealworms, and roaches
  • Seeks out as much moisture as possible

Danger:

  • Low. A sting from a Stripe tail scorpion is not medically significant, despite their venomous nature. It is still best practice to keep a safe distance and call us

Fun Fact:

Giant Hairy Scorpion

  • Largest species of scorpion in the US; Can grow up to 7 inches in length

Vinegaroons

Physical Characteristics:

  • Brown/black in color

Scorpion Pest Control

Scorpions are nocturnal and like to avoid the sun to hide in dark, undisturbed areas.

They prefer cool, moist areas such as under rocks, bricks, leaves, logs, pieces of bark,

inside storage containers, inside sheds. In the home, they may be found in dark closets,

drawers, inside shoes, underneath clothing, blankets, under beds.

Scorpions will not chase you down and sting you. Leave the scorpion alone, if possible. If you find a scorpion in your home, do not touch it. Use a container to trap and discard it. Remember that a scorpion will survive in water. If you encounter a scorpion in a pool or spa, do not assume it is dead and cannot sting.

Yes. You can certainly try DIY methods, including purchasing pre-mixed chemicals from

big box stores or even concentrated chemicals online. However, it’s important to

remember that scorpions very rarely live alone. Although scorpions will not attack

humans without threat, if accidentally stepped on, scorpions will defend themselves by

stinging you. You may regret trying to tackle your scorpion problem on your own,

putting your family and pets at risk. Keep those who matter most safe with the help of

an experienced pest control company with the skills necessary to handle an infestation

and prevent further scorpion sightings.

The best defense against scorpions entering your home is to make sure all openings are

securely closed. Finding these access places is our specialty at Allied Pest Management,

and we can seal your home to keep scorpions out. Using insecticides inside your home

to control scorpions is also less necessary if your home is well sealed. We utilize

environmentally safe sealant materials when we find holes, gaps, or cracks that could

be exploited as a scorpion entry point. We also use procedures similar to

weatherstripping to seal larger openings, including doors. Additionally, we can block off

the parts of your garage that are susceptible to invasion by scorpions. We thoroughly

educate our customers in prevention techniques to protect you and your family. Here

are a few tips:

  • Check common scorpion hiding spots throughout your home regularly
  • Clear any unnecessary items from your yard, basement, attic, and garage
  • Install weather strips around your doors and put screens on your windows
  • Trim foliage and trees around your home and keep them neat throughout the year
  • Fix leaky faucets and pipes because scorpions are attracted to moisture

A scorpion sting can look similar to a bee sting or spider bite with redness, but it is

often accompanied by pain, numbness and/or tingling where the stinger contacts the

skin. A person stung by a scorpion may experience mild to severe symptoms including:

  • Pain, numbness, stinging
  • Redness
  • Painful shock waves
  • Shooting pain up the limb where stung
  • Muscle twitching
  • Trouble breathing or swallowing
  • Blurry eyesight
  • Slurred speech

A scorpion infestation is not something you ever want to deal with. If you think you

have one on your property, contact the professionals with Allied today for a FREE

estimate on scorpion maintenance and prevention services.
